PrintThe Senate could this week debate a controversial act that would give undocumented students a way to earn citizenship.
Under the proposed Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act, or DREAM Act, undocumented immigrants who graduate from a U.S. high school would be able to apply for permanent residency if they complete two years of college or serve two years in the military. The act was first introduced in 2003.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., promised in November to hold votes on the bill. Several Republicans have vowed to vote against the act.

I believe the DREAM Act should pass but must be amended in one of two ways. Have the DREAM Act provide work permits indefinitely to the beneficiaries this way they can't become citizens and they can't petition their parents OR in addition to the current DREAM Act, add an amendment that would remove the parents as petition candidates for residency for naturalized citizens. The DREAM Act is a good piece of legislation, it's good for the economy, the military, and it is humane and just, but it needs to also address the chain migration to make sure the parents, the ones who did break the law consciously, don't benefit.
