PrintCOLUMBIA — The Boone County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint and saturation patrol in Boone County between Dec. 6 and Dec.12.
“Using the checkpoints we aim at deterrence — keeping residents from drinking and driving,” Sheriff's Department Deputy Nikki Antimi said.
The Sheriff's Department is not working with any other local police departments to host the checkpoint. To finance the checkpoint, the department will pay its traffic deputies overtime using grant money from the Missouri Department of Transportation.
Checkpoints funded by MoDOT typically fall within holiday seasons. However, MoDOT also chooses other dates during the year when sheriff's departments around Missouri focus on drinking and driving, said Jacki Rogers, MoDOT's senior assistant management specialist for highway safety.
The checkpoints are typically stationed at the main roads leading out of Columbia or other cities in the county, Antimi said.
“These roads are the larger veins before they branch out into the country, where it might be hit or miss if we would do any good,” Antimi said.
After conducting the checkpoint for a few hours, the Sheriff’s Department plans to saturate the area around the checkpoint by instructing deputies to drive through streets in the area, Antimi said.
“It’s always good if we don’t get anything and the checkpoints deter drivers from drinking," Antimi said. "Our goal is to get everybody home safe."
