PrintThe issue of City Council stipends is likely to be brought before voters again on the April 5 ballot.
City Council stipends have been put before Columbia voters four times in the past and each time voters have shot it down. The last time the issue was brought up was in 1992.
A group of former mayors and other political leaders have resurrected the issue by sending a letter to the council in support of stipends. The group made an appearance at Monday's pre-council meeting to give a presentation. They argued that the responsibilities of Council members have increased and recommended $6,000 for council members and $9,000 for the mayor.
The proposal would not take affect until 2014, until all the current members have completed their terms.

I suppose this is yet another example of why it is said to be impossible to fight against local politics. The answer is .... .... ......... ..... ..... .... ........ ..... ....... ... .... ........ ... ....... .......... ...... .... .. .... ......... ..... .. ..... ........ ..... ..... ... NOBODY CARES!!!!!
(at least give them enough to buy a happy meal every once in a while)
