COLUMBIA — The Hickman boys basketball team held a small lead for much of the night Tuesday against Jefferson City but saw it disappear in the fourth quarter in a 57-48 loss to the visiting Jays.
With Hickman (1-4) looking to secure an insurmountable advantage early in the second quarter, Da'Quan Dixon committed his second foul. Dixon had scored 10 points in the first quarter for the Kewpies, but only played for a short time in the second quarter.
"Size, bench-wise, we lose a lot when he goes out," Hickman coach David Johnson said. "But the bench kept us in."
Although the bench didn’t give up the lead, they didn’t expand it, either. The lead hovered around five points for most of the second and third quarter, which left Jefferson City with a chance to come back in the fourth. The Kewpies led 40-36 after three quarters.
Jefferson City's Brenden Jackson scored nine points in the fourth quarter to lead the turnaround for the Jays.
"It started on the defensive end," Jefferson City coach David Fox said. "We shut down (Hickman point guard) Marcus Whitt and that led to fast break opportunities."
Whitt only scored three points in the second half, and was even removed from the game for about half of the fourth quarter because of how effectively the Jays were containing him.
"When we put our mind to it, we get good looks," Johnson said. "We have to avoid the mental breakdowns down the stretch."
The Kewpies return to action Thursday when they host rival Rock Bridge. Junior varsity competition starts at 6 p.m., and the varsity game follows.
