TODAY'S QUESTION: What do you think about making schools in Columbia autonomous?

COLUMBIA — The Columbia School Board heard a proposal Monday night to make Brenton, Lee and Ridgeway elementary schools autonomous. This is Columbia Public School's most recent attempt to close the achievement gap.

Autonomy for the three public schools means that the school district would not be in charge of decisions about curriculum and budget and the schools would decide for themselves. They would also still be part of Columbia Public Schools and would be required to follow district and state testing and curriculum guidelines.

In making these schools autonomous, the school board hopes to offer public school alternatives within the school district.
