COLUMBIA — Ed Robb was sworn in as the presiding commissioner of Boone County on Saturday morning despite being hospitalized Wednesday with an irregular heartbeat and having a pace maker installed.
He said his heart stopped three times during Wednesday's emergency, and he credited quick-thinking family members and excellent health care for his recovery.

"When I say I'm very happy to be here, I really mean it," Robb said to the family members and government officials assembled at the ceremony Saturday morning.
Ignoring the advice of his doctors, Robb attended the ceremony instead of being sworn in separately. He received light-hearted chiding for his stubbornness from his friends and colleagues at the ceremony.
The swearing-in ceremony, presided over by County Clerk Wendy Noren, began with Associate Circuit Judge Larry Bryson. Auditor June Pitchford, Prosecuting Attorney Dan Knight, Circuit Judge Gary Oxenhandler, Associate Circuit Judges Leslie Schneider, Christine Carpenter and Deborah Daniels were also sworn in.
Treasurer Jan Fugit, Recorder of Deeds Bettie Johnson, Collector Pat Lensmeyer, and Circuit Clerk Christy Blakemore were not present but were sworn in separately by Noren.
