In his State of the State address on Wednesday, Gov. Jay Nixon proposed a 7 percent cut to higher education appropriations for the fiscal year 2012. The proposal could result in the University of Missouri System searching for ways to cover the $29.8 million budget cut it would face.
The drop in state support, coupled with mandatory increases in expenses next year, will leave the UM system with a budget-funding gap of nearly $72 million, according to a statement released by UM on Thursday morning.
State Rep. Chris Kelly, D-Columbia, voiced his opposing opinion on the matter. He argued that the quality of education in public institutions will drop.
“The governor puts a bright face on it, but over time, these cuts will have a negative effect,” Kelly said, according to previous Missourian coverage.
However, state Rep. Mike Thomson, R-Maryville, looked at Gov. Nixon's proposed cut in a positive light. He said university administrators expected a much higher cut, ranging from 12 to 15 percent, according to the Missourian's previous coverage.
How much money should the state provide for higher education?

You know I don't even like Mizzou. I don't like the administration, I don't like most of the drunk stupid students. I don't like the alumni who come down here with silly hats and tiger garb on themselves and their ugly cars. I don't like a good portion of the faculty. I thoroughly feel sorry for the people who have to deal with the administrators in order to preserve their walmart wages and their retirement.
But just the same, I wonder how it was that Mike Thompson got through school. Oh well, I guess it doesn't matter. He already graduated and probably has enough saved up to send his kids somewhere GOOD.
Mr. Allaire,
I was not aware that you did not like MU. I am wondering what you do not like about the university's administration.
It is possible that the alumni who visit Columbia with "silly hats and Tiger garb" are simply showing school spirit, appreciating the university that helped them earn an education?

Quit while your still alive. I didn't say what I thought of your newspaper.
"I am wondering what you do not like about the university's administration."

Well you see a happy face today for the photo taken for your newspaperette, but imagine the expression when just informed that some brilliant * decided that the right to his invention was university property. Yeah, I don't like the scumbags who subvert your education by adding to it's cost. I don't like the product they "help" churn out.

There's an alumni. Stands out from the rest.
They should have used him in the photojournalism department.
