UPDATE: Forecasters expecting up to 21 inches

Forecasters expect 17 to 21 inches of snow in the Columbia area in the latest advisory from the National Weather Service.

The Weather Service, in an updated warning issued late Monday for a "crippling winter storm," said a mix of light freezing rain, sleet and snow will become sleet and snow Monday afternoon and change to all snow late Monday night, becoming heavy at times Tuesday and Tuesday night.

Snowfall totals of 17 to 21 inches were likely, the Weather Service advised, with locally heavier amounts possible.

Winds with gusts up to 40 mph Tuesday through Wednesday might create whiteout conditions and drifts. Blowing and drifting snow could limit travel for days.
