Push for local food links Missouri schools, farmers

COLUMBIA — An MU Extension program is working to connect public school districts with farmers to bring more locally grown food into school cafeterias.
Officials with the Farm to School initiative are holding a workshop Wednesday in St. Louis as well as a March 2 conference call and a March 30 session in Springfield. A similar session took place in Kirksville last month.
The Missouri effort comes as the U.S. Department of Agriculture is offering grants of up to $100,000 in 2012 as part of a $5 million program to promote farm-to-school projects nationwide.

I think this is a good idea. I'd like to see more agriculture subsidies redirected towards forward thinking initiatives that actually benefit people and not simply handed out to corporate agriculture.
I would like to see fruit and nut trees growing on the playgrounds of every school.
