COLUMBIA — President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric H. Holder announced Wednesday that the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional.
The act says no state is required to recognize a same-sex relationship, but the decision to call it unconstitutional means the Justice Department will no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act. The attorney general said the act is in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution.
The decision came at somewhat of an odd time, considering most major political moves currently have to do with jobs and the economy.
A New York Times article said Thursday that while Obama did not support gay marriage in the 2008 campaign, he said in a news conference last year that his feelings about it are "evolving."
Do you agree with the attorney general and Obama's decision to rule the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional? Why or why not?
