PrintCOLUMBIA — President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric H. Holder announced Wednesday that the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional.
The act says no state is required to recognize a same-sex relationship, but the decision to call it unconstitutional means the Justice Department will no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act. The attorney general said the act is in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution.
The decision came at somewhat of an odd time, considering most major political moves currently have to do with jobs and the economy.
A New York Times article said Thursday that while Obama did not support gay marriage in the 2008 campaign, he said in a news conference last year that his feelings about it are "evolving."

Yes, I do believe it is unconstitutional and a waste of government efforts.
Sarah says it: the government, state or federal, should have no stake in this issue.
From a religious standpoint it is constitutional. From a civil standpoint it is unconstitutional.
Government is supposed to be civil.
