COLUMBIA — Sixth Ward Councilwoman Barbara Hoppe was recognized as the Healthy Community Person of the Year on Thursday night.
Hoppe was awarded for her leadership in acquiring and improving Stephens Lake Park and her work with other healthy initiatives, including the Columbians for Modern, Efficient Transit campaign that was also announced at the Healthy Community Partnership annual dinner.
"I'm just delighted that people have enjoyed the things I worked on and thought were important," Hoppe said.
The Columbia/Boone County Health Department and the PedNet Coalition recognized five community leaders. Other recipients include:
- Laina Fullum of Columbia Public Schools, for raising the bar of the nutritional quality of food at Columbia schools.
- Mayor Bob McDavid for his involvement with the parks sales tax renewal, the Mayor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health and the Mayor's Challenge: Bike Walk and Wheel Week.
- Adam Saunders of the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture for his work in starting urban gardens in the First Ward.
- Paula Williams of the Boone County Minority Health Network for co-founding the network and educating the community about diabetes.
Williams said the award meant a lot to her.
"Every time I think about letting go, somebody comes and says they appreciate what I'm doing," she said.
