St. Charles city, county still want to bar funeral protests

ST. CHARLES — Despite a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in favor of anti-gay demonstrators, St. Charles city and county leaders say they will continue their fight to bar such protests outside of military funerals.
The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday in favor of Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan. Chief Justice John Roberts said in his opinion the First Amendment protects "even hurtful speech on public issues."
St. Charles city and county officials told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the ruling left open whether various local and state restrictions are constitutional. Both the city and county have new ordinances restricting protests.
