PrintCOLUMBIA — An ordinance prohibiting large trucks parked on neighborhood roads is being written by Columbia City Council.
The ordinance was introduced because of a survey conducted by the Office of Neighborhood Services. Neighborhood association presidents and some residents took a survey in January about large trucks and recreational vehicles parked in their neighborhoods.
There were 36 respondents, who shared the following opinions:
- 69 percent said semi trucks should be prohibited from residential areas.
- Less than 50 percent were concerned about prohibiting other large vehicles and RVs.
- 39 percent of respondents said the issue is important to their neighborhoods and should be written up as an ordinance and 61 percent said the large vehicle issue is not a concern in their neighborhoods.
- 30 percent said their neighborhoods already have restrictive covenants concerning large vehicles.
The survey "gave us some idea about what the feelings were and what a variety of opinions were on the issue," Leigh Britt, manager of Neighborhood Services, said.
The office decided to focus on the issue of semi trucks since that was the most important issue to a majority of respondents.
According to a council document, the recommended ordinance could prohibit trucks that are 20 feet or longer or licensed for more than 12,000 pounds from parking on private property in residential areas.
"There are some additional details that need to be worked out," Britt said, such as the wording of the ordinance.
While deciding on details of the new ordinance, the council also looked at existing ordinances from three Missouri cities: Liberty, Independence and Blue Springs. All three have restrictions on large or commercial vehicles parked in residential areas.
Enforcement will be carried out by inspectors in the Office of Neighborhood Services and will not cause any additional cost.

Look maybe somebody bought a place thinking they could park their semi and now the city wants to change the rules? Humm. I only know of one semi that parks fairly often on the street. I know there are more but I really don't think it is a big issue.
