PrintCOLUMBIA — Missouri men's basketball fans across Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma were left without closure while watching the broadcast of the Tiger's game against Kansas when CBS switched from the Columbia game to a broadcast of a game between Michigan and Michigan State.
Some viewers saw a black screen for periods of time before the switch was made.
Missouri was trailing Kansas 63-48 when the broadcast changed. While fans were left wondering what happened, the Tigers started to close on the Jayhawks but lost the game by four points.
Jerry Caraccioli, executive director of communications for CBS Sports, told the Kansas City Star that the switch was a result of issues with sunspots and satellite transponders, the equipment in charge of relaying and transferring broadcast signals.
Tony Mullen, a weekend sports anchor for KRCG, the CBS affiliate in New Bloomfield, said his station received multiple calls from viewers in the area who were upset by the switch. KRCG, however, does not have the power to switch between the broadcast of games.
"All those switches and things like that are controlled at a national level," Mullen said. "We don't have any control over anything like that. Obviously, if we did, we wouldn't be turning off the Missouri game with four minutes left."
