Columbia police make 18 arrests Friday at sobriety checkpoint

COLUMBIA — Columbia police worked a sobriety checkpoint on Providence Road at Big Bear Boulevard on Friday night.

It was active from 11:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., and 222 motorists were stopped at the checkpoint, according to a Columbia police news release. During the checkpoint, police arrested:

  • Three people on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
  • Six people on suspicion of driving with a suspended or revoked license or while unlicensed.
  • One minor on suspicion of alcohol possession.
  • Two people on misdemeanor warrants.
  • One person on a felony warrant.
  • Two people on suspicion of marijuana possession.
  • Two people on suspicion of drug paraphernalia possession.
  • One person on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a loaded firearm (AK-47 assault rifle).

The checkpoint was part of the statewide "You Drink & Drive, You Lose" campaign during March 16-20. Columbia police arrested 14 intoxicated drivers over those five days.
