COLUMBIA — The speculation that Missouri men's basketball coach Mike Anderson is heading to Arkansas is rising again.
On Saturday night, Internet rumors began that Anderson would be taking over as Arkansas’ coach next year. The speculation began when Chris Lincoln, sports director at KTUL in Tulsa, Okla., tweeted that "Reports out of Arkansas say Mizzou coach Mike Anderson to be introduced tomorrow in Fayetteville as Razorbacks new head basketball coach." CBS Sports also posted the same information, but neither proved to be true. Anderson wasn't announced as Arkansas' coach Sunday.
The Missourian followed that report by reporting that former Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson, whom Missouri men’s basketball coach Mike Anderson considers to be a mentor, told the Missourian on Saturday night that he did not think that the rumor was true.
“They know more than I know if that’s the case,” Richardson said. “I think they know more than Mike knows, too.”
When asked whether any talks between Arkansas and Anderson would continue, Richardson said that he was also unaware.
“I don’t know anything about that,” Richardson said. “Mike is his own man, and he will make his own decision.”
Speculation that Anderson would take over at Arkansas began last week, after the Razorbacks fired coach John Pelphrey. Anderson denied the rumors and said that he would remain at Missouri. After the Tigers’ season-ending 78-63 loss to Cincinnati on Thursday, Anderson again addressed the Arkansas rumors.
“I thought I dealt with that,” Anderson said. “I’m excited about what’s taking place at Missouri, and I plan on being at Missouri. That’s the bottom line.”
Anderson has previously declined offers from Georgia and Oregon.
