Winter weather advisory in effect for Columbia until midnight Saturday

COLUMBIA — Icy rain and snow prompted the National Weather Service in St. Louis to issue a winter weather advisory and freeze warning for Boone County and the Interstate 70 corridor Saturday.

The winter weather advisory was issued until midnight Saturday, with a snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches expected in Columbia and 3 to 6 inches expected along Interstate 70. The freeze warning was set to be in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday, according to the Weather Service.

The Weather Service forecast the heaviest downfall of up to 6 inches between California, Mo., and Salem, Ill., with 1 to 3 inches of snow expected for surrounding areas, including Columbia, according to its website.

It was yet to be seen if Saturday's snowfall could help this year break the record-setting 54.9 inches the city saw in the 1977-78 season. On Friday, the 0.4 inch of snow put this year's snowfall at 52 inches. The Weather Service recorded 0.12 inch of precipitation at Columbia Regional Airport around 5 p.m. Saturday.
