COLUMBIA — Matt Painter will not be the next coach of the Missouri men's basketball team.
The Purdue athletics department released a statement Wednesday afternoon confirming that Painter has agreed to a new eight-year contract with Purdue that will be valid through the 2018-19 season.
"We are thrilled to announce that Matt will continue his leadership of our men's basketball program at his alma mater," Purdue Athletics Director Morgan Burke said in the statement. "He has been at the helm of the winningest four-year period in the storied history of Boilermaker basketball, and we pledge to work with him to win championships."
According to Tom Schott, the Purdue assistant athletics director for communications, the final details of Painter's new contract are not yet known, but will finalized before a news conference Thursday in West Lafayette, Ind. The conference is set to take place after Painter has returned from Orlando, where he is currently vacationing with his family.
"Matt is still in Florida and there are some weather issues there we understand," Schott said in a telephone interview.
Painter met with Missouri Athletics Director Mike Alden and his search committee Tuesday about Missouri's interest in hiring him as the next coach of the Missouri men's basketball team. Alden and the committee returned to Jefferson City Memorial Airport from Orlando on Tuesday just after 5 p.m. without Painter.
In the statement, Painter restated his commitment to Purdue, his alma mater.
"I am extremely excited about continuing my career at Purdue," Painter said. "I believe we have built something very special. At the same time, I feel we have much more ahead of us to accomplish."
Painter also spoke about the future of Purdue basketball and his excitement about moving into new team offices and locker rooms.
Painter is a 1994 graduate of Purdue, where he played basketball from 1989 to 1993. Before becoming the Boilermakers' head coach he served as an assistant at Washington and Jefferson, Barton, Eastern Illinois and Southern Illinois. He also served as the head coach at Southern Illinois during the 2003-2004 season, when he led his team to a 25-5 record.
In his six seasons at Purdue, Painter has an overall record of 137-63 . He has led the team to the NCAA tournament each year since 2007, and in 2011 his team finished the regular season with a 25-7 record and received a No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Boilermakers defeated St. Peter’s before losing to Virginia Commonwealth on March 20.
"At the end of the day, my heart is at Purdue, and this is a place where I want to win a national championship," Painter said.

Has the Mizzou AD's office actually made an official announcement yet of the failed search? I haven't seen one, if they have. Seems kind of disingenuous for them to (indirectly) criticize Anderson for not facing the media/fans and then do the same now, when they made their interest in Painter so obvious.
