COLUMBIA — Wayne Goode, a member of the Missouri Board of Curators, said the board's only involvement in the current coaching search is to approve the coach's contract.
Goode said the Board of Curators only hires two people: the university president and the university general counsel. The nine-person board, which is appointed by the governor, will meet at 7:45 p.m. Monday in Columbia. Many members will teleconference into the session.
"We don’t hire chancellors," Good said. "We don’t hire basketball coaches, and so on."
When questioned about his role in the approval of Frank Haith as the next Missouri basketball coach, Goode said that he wasn't concerned with anything except the financial aspects of the hiring. The board must approve all contracts that exceed a certain dollar amount — contracts that include purchases of property and hiring people. Goode said very few university hires fall under the scrutiny of the board.
Goode said he will approach the meeting as strictly a matter of approving or rejecting the financial terms of a contract.
“I couldn’t make even a reasonable judgment on whether or not this person or anyone else would make a good basketball coach,” Goode said.
