PrintCOLUMBIA — The Missouri men's basketball team announced on Monday that former Miami Hurricanes basketball coach Frank Haith would be its new basketball coach.
“We’re very pleased to have such a well-rounded and respected man lead our basketball program into the future,” Mike Alden, MU Director of Athletics, said in a statement. “Frank has demonstrated throughout his career that he fits the criteria we were looking for. And of course, we feel that all of these qualities combined, when given the opportunity at a program with a proud tradition and resources such as ours at Mizzou, that he’s going to win at a very high level."
Haith, 45, was hired by the Hurricanes in 2004. He has an overall record of 129-101 as a head coach, including a 43-69 record in the ACC. The only time that Haith's Hurricanes appeared in the NCAA Tournament was after the 2007-08 season.
“I’m honored to be named the new head coach at the University of Missouri and I want to thank Chancellor Brady Deaton and Director of Athletics Mike Alden for believing in me and presenting me with this tremendous opportunity to come back to the Big 12 Conference and lead this program,” Haith said in the statement. “I have always had a tremendous amount of respect for this university and this program. Mizzou Arena and the facilities here are first class. The support of the students and administration is second-to-none and the tradition is outstanding. I’ll tell you this Mizzou Nation, we are going to win and win big!"

We could "choose" the head coach at Duke or Butler or anywhere, but the coach also has to CHOOSE to come here.

Since not everyone wants to say "yes," he was a good choice--maybe even the best choice.

But if Alden and the board weren't so erratic and damaging to MU's reputation, we could probably get more people to say Yes and have better choices. So if he wasn't the best choice, it's still Alden's fault.
I thought his press conference was really about as good and honest as it could realistically be in these circumstances. But I winced when only about 60 seconds in he referred to himself in the third person.

I assume that "board" refers to the Board of Curators. So exactly how is the board damaging to MU's reputation?
The board is supposed to represent the interests of the entire university system, not the interests of one particular campus.
I would like to ask the new coach designate how he feels about taking MU football and basketball public...let's capitalize on all the rhetoric about how athletics supports the U of MO and actually facilitate the transition for this world class research extensive University to meed that land grant mandate and actually fund tuition for students as the federal mandate specifies.
Whoa! Did the earth tilt just now? Did I just suggest that we the people might actually be better off with an educated citizenry not in debt up to their eyeballs in student loans?
