UMKC professor wins Pulitzer for music

KANSAS CITY — A 57-year-old professor of musical composition at the University of Missouri-Kansas City has won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for music.

Zhou (Jo) Long, a research professor of music composition at UMKC's Conservatory, was awarded the Pulitzer on Monday for his opera, "Madame White Snake." The opera premiered Feb. 26, 2010, by the Boston Opera at the Cutler Majestic Theatre. It draws on a Chinese folk tale and blends the musical traditions of the East and the West.

The Pulitzer prizes were announced Monday in New York.

Proof positive that not only are there three other campuses in this so-called "system" (said campuses having a combined total of more than 50% of the system's students) but that useful and even award-winning activities DO take place on those campuses. Well done!

Still awaiting an article about Emeritus Professor Day (MS&T) winning the prestigious international Phoenix Award, the highest award for glass technology.
