COLUMBIA — The Missouri football team concluded its spring season Saturday with its annual Black and Gold game, and the No. 1 quarterback spot apparently is still up for grabs.
Sophomores James Franklin and Tyler Gabbert are the main competitors to take over the starting position at quarterback next season. In Saturday's annual spring scrimmage, Franklin completed 13 of 21 passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns, while Gabbert completed eight of 22 passes for 48 yards and the game's only interception.
Gabbert told the Missourian both he and Franklin have a lot to improve on when two-a-day practices start in August, but until then, they must wait. It'll be stressful, Franklin added.
"I'm in the No. 1 spot now, but it could still change," Franklin said following Saturday's game. "There's definitely a lot of pressure at the position. You can use that as a tool to motivate yourself and to work harder and get better."
Last season, Franklin was the No. 2 quarterback behind Gabbert's older brother, Blaine, who is expected to be one of the top draft picks in this year's NFL Draft.
Several months still remain for Missouri coach Gary Pinkel to make his final decision.
After spring football, who do you think is Missouri's No. 1 quarterback?
