COLUMBIA — The NFL Draft begins Thursday. The big question: Whom will the Carolina Panthers take with the No. 1 overall pick?
Former Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert is one of the prospects the Panthers might select first overall. Gabbert joins former Auburn quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton as the main prospects who are predicted to be selected No. 1 overall.
New Panthers coach Ron Rivera has acknowledged strong interest in Gabbert, as well as Newton. That comes after Carolina spent its second-round pick a year ago on Jimmy Clausen, who went 1-9 as a starter without a touchdown pass to a wide receiver.
"I don't think Jimmy was a mistake, but if you're going to take Cam Newton, obviously the new coach isn't a believer," ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. said. "And the GM drafted him. When you're in a situation like that, it's bad for the team. It's bad for the quarterback."
Kiper added that he thinks Carolina will take Newton with the first pick. However, other experts and analysts predict that Gabbert will be chosen first overall.
Who do you think will be the No. 1 overall pick in this year's NFL Draft?
