COLUMBIA — Although some of the athletes they were watching were twice their age, two volunteers at this year's Missouri State Senior Games said they were impressed with what they saw.
MU students and sport management majors Aaron Holman of Moberly and Adam Phillips of St. Louis never experienced the Missouri State Senior Games or the Show-Me State Games before but signed up to volunteer when some of their instructors suggested they try it.
"(My teacher) advised me to sign up because I don't have any extracurricular activities," Holman said. "Then, the Senior Games and Show-Me games came up, so I hopped on it."
Phillips, who said he thought volunteering would be a great thing to put on his resume, wasn't prepared for the athleticism he would be seeing.
"I would like to be in that good of shape," Phillips said. "Especially the guys who are 70, 80 years old. It makes me feel a little lazy at times."
After the basketball skill shooting competitions, Holman tested himself against some of the participants in an unofficial contest. He was impressed after watching a man sink 25 of 25 free throws. He said he loves to play basketball and was a little surprised when he lost to men twice as old as himself.
"One guy told me he has been doing this for years," Holman said. "So I have some years to catch up."
