COLUMBIA — Missouri softball was ranked No. 6 overall in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 poll. It is the highest year-end ranking ever for Missouri softball. The previous high for the program was No. 8 in both 2009 and 2010.
Missouri’s 2011 season ended in a trip to the Women’s College World Series for the third straight season. Missouri’s 4-1 win against Oklahoma in an elimination game was the program’s first win at the World Series since 1991.
The softball team also set a program record for wins in a season with 53 wins. The team’s winning percentage of .841 was the third best mark in the country in 2011.
The Missouri roster featured three 2011 All-Americans. Pitcher Chelsea Thomas, whose ERA of 0.95 led the nation, was named to the first team. Ashley Fleming was named to the second team and Rhea Taylor was named to the third team.
Missouri was the second-highest ranked Big 12 team behind Baylor, which finished the season ranked No. 4.
