PrintCOLUMBIA — Chief Judge Phillip Fromme ruled Tuesday that Karen Kahler’s siblings will be allowed to watch the trial of James Kraig Kahler, according to an article by the Topeka Capital-Journal.
Defense attorneys Thomas Haney and Amanda Vogelsberg filed a sequestration motion on June 28 to prevent Karen Kahler’s brother, Bill Hetrick, and her sister, Lynn Denton, along with two others, from being present during the trial, the article stated.
Haney wanted to sequester Denton after an outburst in a previous hearing involving Sean Kahler, the Topeka Capital-Journal article reported.
Fromme ruled that Hetrick and Denton could be in the courtroom except during the testimony of Sean Kahler, Karen and James Kraig Kahler’s surviving son, according to the same article.
James Kraig Kahler was charged in the murders of his wife, Karen Kahler, 44; two daughters, Emily, 18, and Lauren, 16; and Karen Kahler's grandmother, Dorothy Wight, 89, on Nov. 28, 2009 at Wight's home in Burlingame, Kan., according to a previous Missourian report.
Sean Kahler, 12, was the only surviving family member.
The trial is set to begin Aug. 8 and is expected to last three weeks, the Topeka Captial-Journal article stated.
