PrintCOLUMBIA — Missouri junior defensive end Marcus Malbrough will transfer to Lamar University in his hometown of Beaumont, Texas, according to Lamar's official football website.
The news also appeared in a post on the website of the Beaumont Enterprise.
"We are excited to have Marcus come home and join the Lamar family," Lamar coach Ray Woodard said in a statement on the team's website. "I think he'll be a great fit for us."
Because Lamar is in the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision, Malbrough will be allowed to play for the Cardinals this season.
Malbrough graduated from West Brook High School in Beaumont, just over nine miles away from Lamar's campus. A standout in high school, he turned down scholarship offers from Baylor, Iowa and Oklahoma State to come to Missouri for the 2008 season, according to Scout.com.
Lamar's program laid dormant from 1989 until the 2010 season, when the Cardinals returned to the field and went 5-6.
Malbrough was listed third on Missouri's post-spring depth chart behind senior Jacquies Smith and sophomore Michael Sam at one of the defensive end spots. He played in 12 games in 2010 and recorded five tackles.
Offensive lineman Taylor Davis, from Plano, Texas, also transferred from Missouri to Lamar this offseason, signing in December.
