Sallie Mae to postpone loan payments for Joplin tornado victims

JOPLIN — Some Joplin tornado victims who are paying student loans might be able to postpone the payments for a few months.
Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel announced Wednesday that he had reached an agreement with Sallie Mae to allow delay in loan payments. He said the agreement might help about 2,000 Joplin residents who have loans through Sallie Mae, the top financial services company in student loans.
The Joplin Globe reports that payments could be postponed through September.

Michael Maier, senior vice president for Sallie Mae, said in a news release that he hopes the agreement will help some of its customers who were affected by the tornado.
Sallie Mae officials and Zweifel will monitor progress in Joplin to determine if the payment relief should be extended beyond September.
