PrintCOLUMBIA — Karon Rowe, owner of Peppers Nightclub, was arrested after Boone County Sheriff's Department deputies discovered evidence of illegal activity while executing a search warrant at the business on Friday afternoon, detective Tom O'Sullivan said.
"There were numerous firearms, rifles and pistols," he said. "There was evidence the building was being used for prostitution and that EBT cards were being used to illegally obtain food for Peppers."
Missouri Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards are how food stamps are received and used.
The Boone County Sheriff's Department has responded to numerous calls from the Pepper's establishment over the years, including a shooting and a stabbing earlier this year.
Rowe, 61, was released from jail after posting a $9,500 bond for charges of unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful conversion of food stamps and promoting prostitution.
All three of the charges are felonies, O'Sullivan said.
This is the second time that Rowe has been arrested for prostitution charges. In 2007, she pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to promote prostitution and was sentenced to two years of unsupervised probation.
Jeremy P. Flanagan, 32, a maintenance worker for the night club was also arrested during the search for suspicion of unlawful use of a weapon, the media release said. Like Rowe, he is a convicted felon and barred from possessing firearms.
Flanagan was released from jail after posting a $4,500 bond.
Boone County Counselor Charles Dykhouse and the Boone County Prosecuting Attorney's office filed a petition against the owners of the night club for an injunction to close the establishment.
The Internal Revenue Service, Missouri Department of Revenue and Columbia and Boone County Health Departments also assisted with the search warrant.

Who would have thought? I was under the impression this was a classy night club run by upstanding people.
Hard to believe this used to be Haden House.
It's been quite a while, but I recall that if you sat in the bar area, which was on the south side of the building, you could enjoy a nice view of the lights in Columbia - particularly when there were no leaves on the trees. Bar tender, my after dinner B&B if you please.
I am curious as to what other "interesting information" may come of these arrests....
There may very well be some people in our local government that are feeling a bit "uncomfortable" about these arrests at this time....

Uncomfortable to the point that the bags of used condoms might be conveniently disappeared before an accusation prompts DNA tests? I'm all ears because the last time you blew that kind of smoke, it wasn't too long before the city and local media had to acknowledge the fire.
Inquiring minds want to know.
Well Jimmy, we'll just have to wait and see. It could go many different ways....
I would not be too surprised if the investigation was suddenly "discontinued" and these three felonies get dropped and she pleas to one misdemeanor, pays a fine, and “goes home”.....
But it does appear that Law Enforcement is trying to ensure that she is incarcerated for at least a little while on these charges. If that is the case; I doubt she will "go gently".
I think the other "establishments" that she owns are pretty much common knowledge. She has been allowed to operate one of those establishments for so long it almost seems unfair to charge her with anything related to prostitution. She is also a very smart lady, and business person. You can bet that she more than likely has an "insurance policy" stowed away.
There may not have to be any DNA samples taken, if 1/10th of the rumors are true she may well have some really interesting video footage..... I am quite sure that there are some "interesting people" that are at least "squirming" just a little right now.... If I were her I'd have an "insurance policy" tucked away for this occasion... And before some "moron" makes some statement about how unethical or immoral that is, try to remember the ethics and morality of this entire situation to begin with.....
But, it is all just rumors........... LOL.

But Raven, before we judge too harshly; let's not leave out how a person can be affected when their husband puts them in a bath tub and beats them half to death causing brain damage.....
I am not justifying what Karon does. But she is hardly the same person that she was when she was HAPPILY married to Fred.....
Let's also be clear here... It has never been a secret as to what Karon does.. As a matter of fact, one of the "higher ups" at the Boone County Sheriff's Department used to run background checks on her new "employees". I think he has since retired from the BCSD.
