Boone County Sheriff's Department to conduct safety checkpoint this weekend

COLUMBIA — The Boone County Sheriff's Department will conduct a safety checkpoint at an unknown location during daylight hours of Aug. 12 through 14, according to a news release issued by the department.

Drivers who are stopped at the checkpoint will be asked for his or her driver's license and proof of car insurance. The process is expected to cause minimal traffic delays, according to the release.

The location of the checkpoint has been determined based on the number of citations that have been issued there, the release stated.

The checkpoint is intended to address the amount of suspended, revoked, unlicensed and uninsured drivers who have been pulled over in Boone County between July 1 of last year and Aug. 1 of this year, according to the release.

The number of drivers cited for driving with a suspended or revoked license was 383 during that period. During that same time police cited 135 drivers without a valid driver's license and 597 without proof of insurance, the release stated.
