PrintCOLUMBIA — A candlelight vigil was held Saturday night behind DC's Bar and Grill for Marvin Holmes, a local Columbia DJ who passed away Saturday evening after spending a week in critical condition at University Hospital, said Tiffany Williams, his daughter.
Over 100 people attended the vigil, where family members — including Holmes' brother the Rev. James Holmes — and friends gave short speeches, prayed, reminisced and released balloons in his honor.
Holmes was a DJ for over 20 years, his daughter said.
He performed regularly under the name DJ Ice at DC's Bar and Grill. He also performed at Christmas parties at Joe Machens Dealerships — where he also worked — and at private parties and wedding receptions, Williams said.
“He loved music,” she said. “Even more than that he loved making people happy, making sure they have a good time and enjoy themselves.”
Holmes was taken to the hospital with a head injury early on Aug. 21 after a physical confrontation with another man at DC's. He remained in critical condition until Saturday evening, when he died.
DC's Bar and Grill has remained closed since the incident took place.

I heard that the Columbia Police Department broke up this peaceful assembly. Can anyone tell me why the police felt the need to break up a prayer vigil led by a man of God?
Mr. Stephens: Thank you for commenting and bringing this to our attention. I just checked with the Columbia Police Department Public Information Officer Latisha Stroer, and she said the police received an anonymous call at 8:48 p.m. Saturday regarding a traffic hazard. She said that the caller informed the police that more than 200 people were standing in the street holding candles, and traffic was unable to pass through.
