Columbia to honor 9/11 victims with concert, memorial walk

COLUMBIA — Schools and organizations across the city are putting together events to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11.

The Missourian has assembled a list of events open to the public for those who want to participate.

Around the city

• Peaceworks will be holding “No More Victims: We Declare Peace” at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Islamic Center of Central Missouri. The event is free. The center is located on the corner of Fifth and Locust streets.
• The City of Columbia and the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Columbian Chapter are hosting a ceremony from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. Sunday at City Hall Plaza, Eighth Street and Broadway. 
• The Missouri Theatre Center for the Arts will present a memorial concert at 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $5 and can be bought the day of the performance.

On campus

• Consul Brian Herman of the Canadian Consulate in Chicago will present “A Decade of Evolving Partnership: The Canada-U.S. Relationship from 9/11 to Today” at 3 p.m. Thursday in Fred W. Smith Forum in the Reynolds Journalism Institute.
• The Mizzou Black Men’s Initiative is hosting a 9/11 Memorial Walk at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The walk will begin in front of the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center and end at the Boone County Courthouse.
• To honor those who died on Sept. 11, MU will ring the bells in Memorial Union, Switzler Hall and the Reynolds Alumni Center to coincide with the times planes hit the buildings 10 years ago — 7:48 a.m. (the first tower); 8:03 a.m. (the second tower); 8:37 (the Pentagon); and 9:03 a.m. (crash of United Flight 93).
• Columbia College Republicans are creating a flag memorial with 2,977 flags on the lawn of Bass Commons in front of St. Clair to represent each person killed in the terrorist attacks.
• Stephens College will have a banner hanging in Stamper Commons where students, staff and faculty can leave messages honoring the victims of Sept. 11. The campus will hold a moment of silence at noon Sept. 12 followed by the ringing of the chapel bells.

In the public schools

• West Junior Middle School will have hourly announcements via intercom Friday with historical and patriotic information.
• Teacher Janet Swope at Midway Heights Elementary School has her class drawing artwork for the stairwell that will be used in the Kansas City 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb. Twelve firefighters from Columbia will be participating in the event.
• Rock Bridge Elementary School teacher Deb Diller will have her fifth-grade class create remembrance ribbons and cards for each teacher to wear on Friday.
• Lee Elementary School will sing patriotic songs at their school assembly and have a moment of silence at the beginning of the day during their announcements Friday.
