PrintCOLUMBIA — Derrick Washington, a former MU football player charged with domestic assault, was granted his eighth continuance by Boone County Associate Circuit Judge Deborah Daniels on Friday.
The court trial was rescheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 30.

Daniels showed frustration when Washington's attorney, Christopher Slusher, and Boone County Assistant Prosecutor Andrea Hayes, submitted a joint request for the continuance. Daniels noted that the case is now in its 13th month with this continuance.
Slusher and Hayes said they are waiting until a felony charge against Washington for sexual assault has been tried before going forward with a plea negotiation on the domestic assault charge.
According to previous Missourian reporting, Washington was arrested in September 2010 for third-degree domestic assault in connection with a dispute with his ex-girlfriend. According to the police report, Washington refused to leave the victim's home, then grabbed her by the throat, pinned her down and struck her multiple times in the face. He then pressed his fingers into her eyes, she told police.
In a separate incident, Washington is being charged with deviate sexual assault of a 23-year-old woman in June 2010. An order of protection was issued against him on June 22, 2010, which forbade him from communicating with or going to the woman's residence. The order stated Washington could not abuse, threaten, stalk, molest or disturb the woman.
Washington was not in court on Friday. A jury trial for the sexual assault charge was scheduled for 9 a.m Sept. 20, before Circuit Judge Kevin Crane. A hearing on the sexual assault charge was also scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday.
