PrintCOLUMBIA — Fifth and sixth graders at College Park Christian Academy spent four days this week at Camp Heritage in Climax Springs.
For at least two decades, fifth and sixth grade students have been sent to the academy's Outdoor School. This year, five girls and one boy, along with the Rev. Sam Whatley and his wife, participated in the program.
They lived in cabins and took classes in first aid, health and natural remedies. The students also learned about edible plants, participated in scavenger hunts and had bonfires, coordinator Sandee Bales said.
“The kids come back all pumped up,” Bales said. “Yes, they’ve had crazy episodes in the cabins at night and that kind of thing. But it’s a good experience for the kids.”
The fee, split between the school and the students, is $60 per student, which includes meals and lodging.
“It gives the kids a good opportunity to experience camp in an environment where they’re going to do a lot of learning,” Bales said. “I think that kids realize it’s a great way to go to school.”
