PrintCOLUMBIA – The Columbia Police Department will continue efforts to stop impaired drivers Sept. 19-25, according to a news release by the department.
Increases in enforcement will include at least one sobriety checkpoint thisweekend and increased saturation patrols, according to the release. These efforts are part of the "You Drink & Drive, You Lose" campaign aimed at stopping people from driving while intoxicated and are funded by a Missouri Department of Transportation grant.
There were 12 DWI arrests over the weekend, which is not an unusual number considering weekend activities such as the MU football game, Columbia traffic unit supervisor Curtis Perkins said.
Perkins said the checkpoints work well to catch impaired drivers. Last month a checkpoint stopped just under 500 cars and made 15 arrests, he said.
Drivers should expect minimal delays at the checkpoints. Perkins said the department tries to keep the delays around 5 minutes and will let traffic by if the delays take longer. The police would then resume the checkpoint once traffic has cleared up.
Perkins could not disclose the location or date of this weekend's checkpoint.

End-of-the-month quotas, but in the case of drunk drivers, I'm all for it! I also like how the checkpoints turn into multiple arrests for outstanding warrants. We don't we do more of these?

I am all for it as well. In the case of drunk drivers. However, in the case of the 498 drivers out of the 500 (the radio said that only 2 of these arrests were for DUI) that were stopped that weren't drunk and who's 4th amendment rights were violated I am not for it. Disgraceful that we continue these illegal checkpoints instead of using saturation patrols which are equally effective and don't violate the constitution.

It will be so much better once we are all confined to our homes.

For the record your chances of catching me driving impaired is exactly zero.
"Sobriety" checkpoint = Bald Face Lie.
But, they must be called that because SCOTUS so far has only said that this violation of the constitution (they did admit it was one) was OK because catching drunk drivers, specifically, was more important than the constitutional guarantees of right to privacy.
These are obviously "Papers Please, All Laws Compliance" checkpoints. Expect more of this as time goes on. Before too long, if we want any real freedom or liberty, we'll have to send ourselves to IRAQ!
