COLUMBIA — Derrick Washington sobbed loudly while being escorted from a Boone County courtroom Wednesday after a jury found him guilty of deviate sexual assault by a unanimous vote.
The panel of six men and six women returned the verdict at 5:40 p.m. The day's seven witnesses included Washington's accuser's roommate, Lauren Gavin, and the lead investigator for the case, Detective Sam Easley.

On Tuesday, the jury heard from the accuser, her father and another of the accuser's roommates.
Washington was charged with the Class C felony in connection to an incident that occurred on June 19, 2010. An order of protection was issued against Washington on June 22, 2010, prohibiting him from visiting or communicating with his accuser, who was 23 at the time.
"These cases are always very difficult," Boone County Assistant Prosecutor Andrea Hayes said. "I hope this (verdict) encourages other women to come forward."
Hayes said she has yet to make a sentencing recommendation. At this time, Washington may face up to seven years in prison, a sentence that will be decided by Circuit Judge Kevin Crane on Nov. 7. Washington waived his right to a jury sentencing Sept. 12.
Washington's attorney, Christopher Slusher, declined to comment.
