PrintEMPORIA, Kan. — Federal agriculture officials said Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. is recalling about 131,300 pounds of ground beef that might be contaminated with E. coli.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday that it was alerted to the problem by health officials who had discovered E. coli illnesses in Butler County, Ohio. Ground beef collected from the patients' homes tested positive for the bacteria.
The products being recalled include Kroger-brand ground beef, Butcher's Brand beef and generic label beef. All the beef was produced Aug. 23. The Kroger beef has a product code of D-0211 QW; the Butcher's Brand code is D-0211 LWIF and generic label's product code is D-0211 LWI.
A request for comment from a Tyson Foods spokesman was not immediately answered.

E. coli infection from ground beef would never happen if people would cook their meat to the recommended temperature, avoid contact of cooked meat with raw meat or juices from it, and make sure that meat is being stored at the proper temperature.
I imagine most of the meat has been safely eaten, and that which hasn't can be safely eaten if people just follow the guidelines. This recall is unnecessary - it happens mostly because of product liability concerns (thenk you, legal profession).
Give thenks we live in a country where we can afford to waste most of the food we produce.
