Fairground manager calls it quits after nearly two decades

George Harris, general manager of the Boone County Fairgrounds for nearly 20 years, puffs on his pipe between chores on Saturday during his last weekend event. Harris' resignation takes effect on Oct. 1, his 79th birthday. "I buy my own tobacco five pounds at a time so I don't run out," Harris said. "Maybe now I can grow my own."

George Harris will officially retire as manager of the Boone County Fairgrounds on Saturday, his 79th birthday. His time at the grounds has brought him friendships, stress, pleasure — and some controversy.
