COLUMBIA — The Columbia Parks and Recreation Department wants to get public input on a pending update of the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan.
A meeting will be held to get input on the plan from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Activity and Recreation Center, 1701 W. Ash St. There are different time slots for certain areas of interest:
- 6 to 6:45 p.m. — Sports and athletics
- 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. — Environment and natural resources
- 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. — All other areas
City park education specialist Janet Godon said gathering public input on the master plan is a long and ongoing process that's intended to involve all interested parties. "It's kind of a wish list of park users," she said.
The master plan was last updated in 2002 and was designed to be a 10-year plan, according to the city's website.
After hearing from the public, the department will present options to the Columbia City Council. Various boards and commissions also will hold hearings and review the plan.
The goal is for the plan to be written and approved in 2012 and implemented in 2013, Godon said.

I want a year-round Hacky Sack arena!
Lights for the skate park/hockey rink!
I agree with Nick on this. Lights for the Skate park and Hockey rink are much needed improvements for our city. On a more personal level, I ride BMX, and would like the city to reconsider the "NO BIKES" rule at the skate park. The BMX riders in this community are disappearing because we cannot ride anywhere in the city legally. Over the last several years we have ridden in the park, and have had very few issues with the skaters. We are all there to have fun and push ourselves. With the addition of lights, we could then have separate hours of use for safety reasons. I don't want to break the law, but, as a BMX rider, I have no other option. Will the city please reconsider their stance on this issue?
