COLUMBIA—Alive in Christ Lutheran Church will host illusionist Jeff Copeland on Friday as a part of its Trader Lock In.
The lock in, from 8:30 p.m. Friday to 8:30 a.m. Saturday, is open to any student in eighth through 12th grade. Breakfast will be provided.
“The push for the weekend is, if you have a relationship with Christ, are you really willing to be a trader?” Stephen McBee, director of youth ministries, said. “If we’re really to be the representation of God, then can we trade that Starbucks coffee and save that money to help feed children in Africa? An hour of time to tutor a kid who needs help?"
Copeland has recently been named the Heartland of America Magician of the Year, according to his website. McBee said he and some of the youth members saw Copeland doing street magic in Columbia for a festival and wanted to book him for the lock in.
“Jeff has the best ability I’ve seen to draw people into the illusion and still amaze them. They become a part of the whole deal,” McBee said.
In addition to the illusionist show, which will start at 10:30 p.m., there will be worship, a Humans vs. Zombies game, fellowship activities and a marshmallow roast, McBee said.
