9 a.m. COLUMBIA - A brisk Saturday won’t deter devoted fans from a football game.
They’ll come out to feast and drink at a tailgate. They’ll come out to root for their team and bask in school spirit, just as they’ve done for every other home game.
But maybe today they are bored with their reliable Mizzou t-shirt. So they’ll gather their friends and travel across the stadium’s parking lot to the Tiger Team Store.
It’s controlled chaos. The outside door to the store is locked, and a man guards it. He stands guard against anyone who may try to sneak into the game through the store’s outdoor entrance. Unless they’re willing to enter the stadium early, fans will have to settle for the metal-barricade-lined makeshift store that is set up in the parking lot.
Fleece blankets, t-shirts and pom poms, sit on the table waiting to be bought … or to be used as a prop.
Children run to the store with their mom and dad. They excitedly pick up a variety of shirts and hold them up in front of their chests. Their mom reaches into her purse, takes out her point-and-shoot camera and directs them to line up. She lifts up the camera and aims it towards her children. The shutter clicks.
A perfect memento from a perfect brisk Saturday morning.
