PrintCOLUMBIA — Homecoming queen candidates at Hickman High School raised more than $15,000 during a three-week fundraising effort this year.
Hickman's homecoming took place from Oct. 3 to 7. The 10 candidates, all seniors, were selected by members in clubs that they participate in, student government sponsor Jeffrey Devero said.
At the start of their candidacy, the girls selected a charity. With the support of family, friends and the school, each girl raised about $1, 500, Devero said.
Candidates selected the Central Missouri Humane Society, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Special Olympics and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as some of their charities this year, he said.
Taulor Bunch, ultimately voted Hickman's 2011 homecoming queen, donated more than $1, 300 to the Joplin Missouri Relief Disaster Fund.
"I knew that they still had a long way to go in the rebuilding process," Taulor said.
She was the first candidate chosen from the Future Farmers of America club. Bunch said she joined the club because her older brother participated while he was a student at Hickman.
"I thought that it was really cool (that) I was the first candidate," she said, adding that she received a lot of support from her parents, friends and members in her club.
Unlike last year's candidates whose parents were greatly involved, senior girls this year spearheaded most fundraising efforts on their own, Devero said.
"We were so proud of them," he said.
