The announcement that MU will join the Southeastern Conference has sparked much discussion about the cultural differences between MU and long-standing SEC schools. But how does Missouri fit in as a state compared to other SEC states?
There's no reason why football and basketball games between KU and MU can't continue on an annual basis.
University of Georgia and Georgia Tech do that, and they are in different athletic conferences.
University of Iowa and Iowa State University do that, and they aren't in the same athletic conference. In basketball it goes even further: there's a "round robin" between those two universities and University of Northern Iowa, which is in yet another athletic conference.
Games would probably need to take place BEFORE the conference schedules of the respective teams commence, meaning that an annual football game would probably need to take place in early September.
Of course if MU really DOESN'T want to play KU, or if KU really DOESN'T want to play MU...
BTW the state of Iowa is now geographically cut off from other states in the Big 12. So is West Virginia, but it has never bordered on any state in the Big 12.

Those 10 win seasons began for the luckiest football coach in football history, Gary Pinkel, when Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas St, Texas A&M and to a lesser extent, Kansas made head coaching changes that did not pan out. Along with all the "patsy's" he could schedule Pinkel capitalized, big time. Since, those schools have changed head coaches again with better hires and Pinkel is back where he would have been, nearer the bottom and not in a Bowl.
Please pass the boiled okra, grits, black eyed peas, corn pone, hush puppies an' the like down to this end of the table; we ain't had none yet.
Okra is a fascinating vegetable: if you slice it into thin "discs" and fast fry it (from green to brown) in a light vegetable oil it makes a tasty, crunchy, appealing-looking snack; boil it, and it ends up looking like green dog barf.
