PrintCOLUMBIA — The 2012 Missouri Homecoming date is set for Oct. 27, when the Tigers will face the Wildcats of the University of Kentucky.
Todd McCubbin, executive director of Mizzou Alumni Association, said the association looked at both the football schedule and the calendar when deciding the Homecoming date. The Southeastern Conference released the 2012 football season schedule this morning.
“The key is that people are caught up with who we play, but we look at date,” McCubbin said.
That date was originally selected a couple of years ago when Missouri picked its 2011 and 2012 Homecoming dates for the Big 12 Conference, McCubbin said. Missouri would have played Texas A&M next year on Oct. 27 had it stayed in the Big 12.
McCubbin said the last three Saturdays in October were the most ideal dates for Homecoming, and the Tigers will play on two of those — Oct. 13 and Oct. 27.
The game against Vanderbilt on Oct. 6 seemed too early, and the first week of October is “never ideal,” McCubbin said, because it does not give students enough time to decorate.
Along with the date, ticket sales and availability are also considered in determining when Homecoming will be. McCubbin said the game against Alabama on Oct. 13 will be a huge game in Columbia and tickets will be sold fast. McCubbin and the association wanted to give alumni a chance to get tickets.
The Big 12 had provided schedules for multiple years, but with the addition of Missouri and Texas A&M, the SEC chose not to commit to schedules beyond next season.
“The SEC gives us schedules year by year, so we don’t have the luxury of considering multiple Homecoming dates anymore,” McCubbin said.
