COLUMBIA — As announced Tuesday afternoon by the league office, sophomore Alan Waters has, once again, been named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week.
No. 3 ranked Waters was 3-0 at the Virginia Duals this past weekend, helping Missouri advance to the championship, where it lost to Kent State. Along the way, Waters beat No. 19 Trent Sprinkle of North Dakota State by a score of 4-2 and Kory Mines of Edinboro 6-2. In the finals, Waters beat No. 4 ranked Nic Bedelyon of Kent State for the second time this season.
This season, Waters is 17-1 overall and 8-0 in duals. Against top-20 wrestlers, he is 6-1.
Waters also earned the award on Dec. 12, 2011. Because junior Brent Haynes won the award this past week, it is the first season that Missouri has had three Wrestler of the Week winners since the 2006-07 season.
No. 14 Missouri's next event is at 1 p.m. on Jan. 29 in Edwardsville, Ill., a quad-meet against Eastern Michigan, SIU-Edwardsville and Truman State.
