COLUMBIA — Two Missouri gymnasts were given Big 12 honors this week. Senior Mary Burke was named Gymnast of the Week, and freshman Rachel Updike was named Newcomer of the Week.
For Burke, the award comes after she won the all-around title against Southern Utah on Jan. 13. In that meet, she posted a season-high 39.175 all-around score, also earning the bars title at the meet with a 9.875. She set season-highs on vault, bars and beam — the 9.850 on vault was strong enough to match her career-high score.
This is the second consecutive week this season that Updike has been given the award. In the meet against Southern Utah, Updike matched her season and career-high score on beam with a 9.850. She also won the vault title.
Missouri hosts No. 16 Denver on Friday at the annual Pink Out meet. The first 500 fans to arrive at the Hearnes Center will be given free T-shirts and $1 of every ticket sold will be given to cancer research.
