For the first seven minutes of the game, the Missouri women's basketball team had the lead over No. 14 Texas A&M.
But the Aggies' defense slowly wore down the Tigers in Missouri's 78-52 loss Wednesday in College Station, Texas.
"They were a team with such great defensive pressure," Tigers coach Robin Pingeton said by phone. "It's going to beat you down. That continuous pressure wore on us."
The Tigers finished the first half down by just seven points, shooting 54.5 percent from the field. But Missouri shot 27.3 percent in the second half, scoring only 19 points.
Missouri falls to 0-5 in the Big 12 Conference and 10-6 overall. The Tigers have not beaten Texas A&M since 2005, with the Aggies winning the past eight matchups.
But Pingeton said her team is not deflated, that they are not hanging their heads. She said that though it might not show in the box score, her team is making great strides.
"A lot of it is intangible, the toughness we’re playing with," Pingeton said. "The attention to detail is better, we're moving the ball really well, boxing people out."
Senior Christine Flores led the Tigers with 13 points, and senior BreAnna Brock finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Tigers continue to struggle with turnovers, with 39 of Texas A&M's points coming off 25 Missouri turnovers. Against Kansas on Saturday, the Tigers committed 18turnovers.
"Turnovers have been our Achilles' heel all season," Pingeton said. "But we're young, we're rebuilding and we're getting better."
