Temperature to flirt with record, prompts fire danger warning

COLUMBIA — If Monday's temperature reaches just two degrees above the forecast high of 67 degrees, Columbia will beat its 1890* record for a maximum temperature on this day.

The record is 68 degrees, according to a climate summary from the National Weather Service Office in St. Louis.

The summary also shows drastic differences in snowfall between this winter's and the average. Normal values are 9.9 inches since Dec. 1 and 5.1 inches since Jan. 1. This winter's values are 2.9 and 1.6 inches, respectively.**

The high temperature and low humidity prompted the weather service to issue a hazardous weather outlook at 10 a.m. The warning is for increased fire danger in portions of central and southeast Missouri. Planned burning projects, especially in areas with dead grasses, should be carried out carefully.

The warm weather is expected to stick around. Columbia residents can expect daily high temperatures of 61 degrees Tuesday, 55 degrees Wednesday and 54 degrees Thursday.
