COLUMBIA — A 22-year-old man was shot in the upper thigh during a fight behind public housing at the 200 block of Lincoln Drive on Monday night, police said.
Columbia police Sgt. Bruce Houston said an altercation between two or more people broke out on the basketball courts behind two of the buildings on Lincoln Drive.
"A gun was brandished, and someone was hit with one round," Houston said.
The victim, whose injuries are not life threatening, was taken to University Hospital. No one else was injured.
Officers found two different types of shell casings at the scene but no firearm.
Houston said detectives will talk to witnesses, who reported a fight between the victim and an unidentified suspect. Houston said the specifics of the fight and shooting are unclear.
"We're trying to identify a potential suspect or suspects," Houston said.
Lincoln Drive was temporarily blocked off as police investigated but has been reopened to traffic.

@ Ray Shapiro:
Ray, I hadn't realized that you are an MS&T alumnus, or that at the very least you must have matriculated at MS&T. The chant you cite is from an old MS&T chant, except that in the old MS&T chant "shoot" is replaced by "kick."
Those were less violent times. :)
