PrintNEW YORK — After three days of controversy, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer charity said it is reversing its decision to cut breast-screening grants to Planned Parenthood.
"We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives," a Komen statement said.
Komen had adopted criteria excluding Planned Parenthood from grants because it was under government investigation, notably a probe launched in Congress at the urging of anti-abortion groups.
Komen said Friday it would change the criteria so it wouldn't apply to such investigations.
"We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants," the statement said.

Too little, too late. I've learned a lot about the SGK foundation these past few days. Making the huge gaffe of trying to push an antiabortionist political agenda ripped the lid off of several other big issues; like little actual funding for research and an organization that seems more about money than about actually doing good, including actively sueing any organization or entity that uses the phrase "for the cure" without their express permission, and selling out to such questionable sponsors as KFC; what, exactly, about transfat laden fried chicken promotes womens' health?
And now they've managed to piss off *both* sides of the debate; first the pro-choice folks, who are still angry and not in a forgiving mood, and now the anti-choice folks as well, for flipping sides.
It should also be noted that SGK has only promised to continue with their current funding until that funding period expires. My take on that is that they will drop PP as soon as it comes up for renewal.
They aren't sorry, they are just sorry people called them on it.

I am sorry that Komen succumbed to the bullying tactics of Planned Parenthood who broke the story to turn on Komen. I fail to understand why Komen gave Planned Parenthood $700,000 annually in the first place. The only type of breast related health care Planned Parenthood provided was a basic manual exam like women do themselves each month and referrals for mammograms. It costs nothing to do this, and it is usually incorporated into a well woman visit. Planned Parenthood never provided mammograms or any advanced breast care.
Breast exams and mammogram referrals for poor women will not come to a screeching halt. Plenty of other providers who respect life and women's bodies do this most basic screening tool. Frankly, I would not trust my body and health to any person or organization that accepts and promotes the deliberate killing of innocent children.
^Uh, there's a reason why pro-choice people don't call themselves pro-abortion, and that's because they don't promote abortion. Many pro-choice women wouldn't get an abortion themselves, in fact.
Komen has been taken over by very dangerous people. Breast cancer is no joke and these rather pathetic people took up precious time to make an abortion statement. How about you work on a cure for breast cancer and stop spending time making political power plays. You are either worried about ABORTION OR BREAST CANCER. You cannot be worried about both. How many of my family have to suffer the effects of this disease before a cure is found. Unfortunately we have people that don't really care about women's health who have infiltrated Komen and sadly those appear to be women as well. How sad.
